Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to review the color therapy effects by ages, to research the documents of color therapy that had been originated from Western and spread to Korea, and to suggest its future direction. From the study, the following conclusions were obtained: First, as a part of light, each color has its own wavelength and frequency. When its specific energy is absorbed into the human body, it can have influence on the energy flow in the human body. On the basis of this scientific fact, it can be used in the treatment of diseases or psychological disorders. Every kind of color can be used for the color therapy to keep the health and balance of individual person. Second, as a specific color in the light is absorbed or reflected according to characteristics of matter, some colors can be selected artificially for the special purpose. Thus, the color has the ¡®purposiveness¡¯ as well as the ¡®functionality¡¯ to reflect the change of human psychology. With these two features, colors can bring out the positive effects through the direct stimulation on human mind and body. Third, colors can be used for diverse scientific diagnosis tests (color diagnosis) and treatments (color therapy). Fourth, 12 typical color therapies which are most prevalent in the present are mainly based on the western theories and their common characteristics are to inject the color energy into human eyes and body. Unlike the theory that the colors are used for the balance and harmony between mind and body, the therapy is biased to the psychological aspect. The color therapy has a long history, but its terminology and concepts have been settled rather recently. However different the cultures and peoples are, the color energy has the same or similar effects in them. But, the color therapy has limits in that there are no international standards. And, it is necessary to set up the methodology to select appropriate colors, the validity test and the index study for it. Furthermore, the consequent studies are required in the future to provide the scientific ground and logical proofs.
